2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Leroy completed the 2017 season with a 12-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region one, the Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. The Bears won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 2A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Lanett at the Alabama Super Seven 33-15 in Auburn. The Bears won as many games as in any season since 2010. Since 2010, Leroy has gone a combined 60-38. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 2A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Leroy has gone a combined 215-90. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 2A and 30th in the AHSAA. The Bears have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. The Bears are led by head coach Jason Massey who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 37-23 over the past five seasons at Leroy. Under his direction the Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Massey. Coach Massey's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 47-34 (58.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Massey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times . The Leroy Bears will play in Class 2A region one during the 2018 season. The Bears should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Bears are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Bears open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Citronelle on Friday, August 31 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Citronelle Wildcats finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 5A region one. The Wildcats ended last season on a positive note with a win over Washington County by a score of 44-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Leroy and Citronelle have met a total of 34 times on the football field. The Bears have a 16-18-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2017 with Leroy winning by a score of 28-6. Leroy returns 2A All-State running back Kelston Fikes. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
