2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mary Montgomery finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Mary Montgomery finished ninth in Class 7A region one with a 0-8 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Vikings lost as many games as in any season since 1998. The defense allowed a team record 441 points last season. The Vikings have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2002 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history. The Vikings hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they did not win a game which followed a 5-5 record in 2016. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Mary Montgomery averaged scoring just 8.5 points a game. The Vikings also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 44.1 points a game. Since 2010, the Mary Montgomery football program has struggled with a record of 21-59. Over the past 25 seasons, Mary Montgomery has not won much with a record of 79-162. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 7A and 329th in the AHSAA. The Vikings have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. The Vikings will be under the direction of new head football coach Stan McCain as they enter the 2018 season. The Mary Montgomery Vikings will play in Class 7A region one during the 2018 season. The Vikings enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Vikings will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Mary Montgomery will be to simply win some games. The Vikings open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Robertsdale on Friday, August 24 at Grider Field. Last year the Robertsdale Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in ninth place in Class 6A region one. The Golden Bears closed out the regular season with a loss to Gulf Shores by a score of 45-19. Mary Montgomery and Robertsdale have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Vikings have a 7-4-0 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2013 with Robertsdale winning by a score of 45-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
