2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Russell County finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Russell County finished sixth in Class 6A region two with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Warriors last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Russell County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.8 points a game. Since 2010, the Russell County football program has struggled with a record of 33-106. Over the past 25 seasons, Russell County has not won much with a record of 50-198. Their 20.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 6A and 376th in the AHSAA. The Warriors have struggled on the football field with only one winning season during this time. Head Coach: The Warriors are led by head coach Dillon Griggs who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-19 over the past three seasons at Russell County. The Warriors have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Griggs. Season Outlook: The Russell County Warriors will play in Class 6A region two during the 2024 season. Since the playoffs began back in 1966 the Russell County Warriors are 2-4 in the post season. They have had one winning season since 1998 and have not won a playoff game since the same year. All that could change this season as the Warriors return enough skilled players to be very competitive in Region 2. With Riggins at QB, Tarver at RB and Harper at wide receiver they could pose a threat to the more traditional football powers in the region. The Warriors could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Russell County has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2013 but hope to return to the post season this year. Players to Watch in 2024: QB Bryson Riggins will be returning after completing 120-of-228 passes for 2,067 yards and 25 TDs last season. WR Jamari Burnett will be back for his junior season after catching 34 passes for 506 yards and 2 TDs last season. Not Kelston Tarver returns at RB after rushing for 781 yards and 6 TDs as a sophomore in 2023. WR Denver Harper will also be back after catching 51 passes for 1,003 yards and 11 TDs. Returning Starters: QB Bryson Riggins, WR Jamari Burnett, RB Not Kelston Tarver, RB Devin Brown, WR/FS Markevious Yancie, WR Denver Harper Season Opener: The Warriors open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Carroll on Friday, August 23 at Corbett-Mitchell Stadium. Last year the Carroll Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 5A region two. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Demopolis by a score of 31-28. Russell County and Carroll have met a total of 21 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 6-15-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2019 with Carroll winning by a score of 14-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
