 2022 Preview

Leroy finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Leroy finished sixth in Class 2A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Leroy took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Bears lost as many games as in any season since 2012. The Bears hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 11-2 record in 2020.

The defense was very stingy last season as Leroy ranked 30th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.1 points a game.

Since 2010, Leroy has gone a combined 93-55. Their 62.8% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Leroy has gone a combined 224-94. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 1A and 36th in the AHSAA. The Bears have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.

The Bears are led by head coach Jason Massey who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 70-40 over the past nine seasons at Leroy. Under his direction the Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Massey.

Coach Massey's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 80-51 (61.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Massey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won two region championships.

The Bears forfeited five games last season but should bounce back in 2022 to their usual playoff spot of contending for a playoff spot every year.

The Leroy Bears will play in Class 1A region one during the 2022 season. The Bears may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region one this year.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier.

The Bears enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Leroy came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The Bears open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Clarke County on Thursday, August 25 at Bobby Farish Field at Palmer Stadium. Last year the Clarke County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 2A region one. The Bulldogs won the Class 2A State Championship last season when they defeated Cleveland by a score of 49-41 in the Super Seven finals in Birmingham.

Leroy and Clarke County have met a total of 72 times on the football field. The Bears have a 30-38-4 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Clarke County winning by a score of 20-14.

Leroy returns 2A All-State Senior defensive lineman Bryston Dixon. He was named to the first team last season.
