Alabama All-Star Game
1959
Halfback George (Butch) Wilson scored a touchdown and Tackle Ken Beard, a teammate from Hueytown, booted a field goal to give the underdog North squad a 10-7 victory in the twelfth annual North-South All-Star Game. Thus, the classic was again knotted, with each squad winning five and two games ending in ties.
Beard's field goal, coming with little more than a minute left in the first period, let fly from the 24 yard line. Wilson scored from the two in the second quarter following an intercepted pass and a IS-yard penalty. The South's only score came in the third stanza when Bessemer Fullback Ken Moore climaxed a 70-yard drive with a dive from the two. Dothan's Gary Martin converted for the South, Beard for the North. Wilson was named most valuable back, while Eufaula Tackle David Watson, playing for the South, was selected as top lineman.
Head-coaching the North was Harold (Red) Lutz of Fairfield, assisted by Elbert Couch, Sylvania; Glendon Gibbs, Brilliant; Homer Smiles, Leeds; and E. C. Wilson, Glencoe. South Boss Tom Jones of Robert E. Lee was aided by R. G. Cook, Union Springs; Charlie Douglas, Bessemer; W. C. Majors, Excel; and Fred Bowers, Pike County.
