Alabama All-Star Game

Kenny Stabler, a Foley youngster with an arm that's had baseball and football scouts on his trail for three years, employed it to hurl the underdog South All-Stars to a historic 34-7 victory over the North All-Stars in the 17th Alabama High School All-Star Football Classic in Denny Stadium.
Time and time again, Stabler sprang favorite receivers Charley Harris of Murphy and David Chatwood of Fairhope into the clear for his left-handed passes, and when he did, the Foley south-paw was a deadly marksman, hitting six of eight for 94 yards. His shortest completion of the game, a three-yarder to Harris, went for the only touchdown through the air.
On two drives, Stabler's passes were big pointmaking and at games' end the South had scored more than any other team in this series launched in 1948.
With the North's scoring on a 24 yard run by halfback Benny Miller of Hokes Bluff, and a point after kick by Allen Taylor of Sylacauga, the game set a record for points -- seven more than those scored in a 20-14 victory for the South in 1962. Kenny Stabler and Charles Harris were named "Most Valuable Players of the Game".
The winning coaching staff was made up of Hamp Cook, Head Football Coach from Opp; Paul Taylor, Macon County; Douglas Barfield, U. M. S.; Johnny Johnston, Bessemer; and Mac Champion, Hayneville.
