Alabama All-Star Game

1970

The North Squad, led by the quarterbacking of Lee Carpenter of Childersburg, the kicking of Woodlawn's Greg Gantt, and the running of Bob Bryant, Boyce Callahan, and Bo Matthews, threatened to make it a run-a-way by jumping out in fromt with a 9 to 0 lead before the South All-Stars were able to move across their 50 yard line.

However, at this point, as Larry MCCullough of Lanett spearheaded a stout South defense that held the North scoreless for the remainder of the game, Bucky Phillippi of T. R. Miller, the South quarterback, rallied his offensive forces and on his strong passing arm and the running of Paul Spivey and Rusty Fuller scored the South's initial touckdown with Fuller taking a hand-off and going into the end zone from 3 yards out. The half ended with the North out front 9 to 7.

Late in the second half, it was the South's defense that set up the winning touchdown. Mike McGill of Benjamin Russell blocked one of Gantt's punts deep in North territory which was r ecove red by Len Gordon on the North's one yard line, and on the first play from scrimmage Bucky Phillippi slammed into the North end zone for the final touchdown and a hard earned 13 to 9 South victory and a 12-9-2 advantage in the 23 year All-Star series.
